Why I’m no longer “The Burnout Psychologist”
A few months ago, I had a moment.
I was sitting with my coffee - and my whiteboard - reviewing the month, my clients, and the direction I was heading.
And quietly, a thought landed that had been building for a while:
“Truthfully? I don’t think I’ve been ‘The Burnout Psychologist’ for a while now”
The name had served me well. It opened doors. It gave people language for an experience they were struggling to make sense of. But as I stood back and reflected - session by session, workshop by workshop - I saw it clearly: burnout was often just the starting point.
Because once the surface symptoms were named - the exhaustion, the detachment, the overwhelm - what emerged underneath was deeper and more complex.
Burnout may have been the doorway.
But the work itself?
Whether I was supporting a CEO navigating hidden self-doubt, a team trying to rebuild psychological safety, or a founder wrestling with the weight of their mission…
The real work was always about helping people think clearly, lead authentically, and perform at their best, from the inside out.
And so… I knew something needed to shift.
Not in who I am or how I work.
But in the name. In the frame I was offering to the world.
Because burnout had started to feel like too narrow a doorway.
What’s changing and why
Today, I want to share something I’ve been quietly building for a while now.
A new chapter, with a name that reflects the true depth of the work.
It’s called Mental Advantage.
Because success isn’t just about hard work.
It’s about the inner architecture that determines how you show up when it matters most.
It’s the psychological core that lets you stay grounded in storms, think clearly in chaos, and act with integrity when the pressure is high.
And that’s what Mental Advantage is here to offer.
So you can meet the moment fully… as the version of yourself your work, your team, and your life truly needs.
What Mental Advantage really means
Mental Advantage is the distillation of everything I’ve come to believe about what truly sustains performance, clarity, and wellbeing - especially in mission-driven, high-pressure environments.
It’s built on over 15 years of clinical and consulting work - supporting traumatised young people, mission-driven founders, senior leadership teams, elite professionals, and frontline staff.
I’ve sat with complexity in all its forms, from acute personal crises to organisational breakdowns. And across every setting, one truth has stood out:
When the internal system is strong, the external challenges are manageable. But when that internal system is strained, even success can become unsustainable.
That’s what Mental Advantage is here to address.
It brings together the depth of clinical psychology with the forward momentum of performance coaching and the human insight of therapeutic work with the strategic clarity of leadership consultancy.
Sometimes that means working one-to-one with a founder carrying pressure no one else sees.
Sometimes it means stepping into a team and helping people reconnect, to each other, and to the mission they signed up for.
Sometimes it’s through keynotes or workshops that shift how people think, or long-term consulting that embeds deeper cultural change.
But across it all, the thread remains the same:
Helping people get psychologically stronger, clearer, and more effective, from the inside out.
What doesn’t change
I’m still the same Matt.
Still passionate about that intersection where purpose and performance meet.
What’s shifting is the frame.
So while the name has evolved, the heart of this work remains the same.
To those who’ve walked this path with me… Thank you!
To the clients who’ve trusted me with their stories.
To the organisations who’ve opened the door to their teams.
To the mentors, supervisors, friends, and family who’ve helped me navigate the many ups and downs of building something meaningful.
This work is a privilege I never take lightly.
And if there’s one thing I’ve learned over and over again, it’s this:
No one does this alone.
No founder.
No parent.
No leader.
No psychologist.
We all need people.
We all need perspective.
We all need space to be seen in our full, messy, ambitious humanity.
So here we are…
Mental Advantage is live.
The work continues, deeper and broader than ever.
And if you’re building something in the world…
If you’re under pressure…
If you know you’re carrying more than you’re showing…
Just know: there’s support.
It works.
And you’re invited.
Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing more about the new course, upcoming workshops, and how to bring this work into your team or organisation.
But for now, I just want to thank you for being here.
For reading.
For walking with me.
Still me.
Same mission.
New name.
Warmly,
Matt
